Lift sharing

Fun and friendly

Lift sharing gives you all the convenience of a car, while saving money! It could be sharing the drive to work with a colleague who is en route, or splitting the school run across a few different parents and carers. Either way, it means less driving for everyone, less spent on parking and petrol, and freeing up space on Oxford’s roads.

Still not sure? Why not look at Liftshare’s savings calculator to help estimate what you would save by sharing your trip with others.

  • Lift shares can also be set up more informally via WhatsApp groups with people from your workplace, school, church, community organisation and so on. There might already even be one you can get added to - ask around and, if not, maybe suggest it to a few friendly folks you think might be interested.

  • If you’re not a driver but are interested in lift sharing, or you're a driver who'd like to start sharing your trips with others, then you can use the Liftshare app to find someone who wants to share their journey. You can use the app for one-off trips or regular rides.

  • There are some great online tools that employers can use to help their employees find lift shares, such as Liftshare For Work, and that schools can use to help parents arrange lift shares for the school run, such as HomeRun App. See if your workplace or child's school is already participating, or is willing to do so!

The Details

Benefits of lift sharing

  • Cheaper. If you’re driving, you get to have someone share the cost of fuel and parking with you. If you’re a passenger, you only have to share the price of fuel and parking, without the rest of the costs of running a car. It’s a win-win!

  • Convenient. All of the comfort of a car, while also putting 50% fewer cars on the road. That means less traffic for you - and everyone else.

  • Friendly. A great way to add some pleasant conversation to your day, get to know colleagues better, or even make a new friend. And you can get your work rants off your chest before you get home!

  • Safe. Using a lift share service like an app or website means there are safeguards in place to protect you. And if you’re organising lift sharing through an institution like a school or workplace, you are likely to already know the people you’re travelling with.
